UK: Vigilantes Destroy Parking MetersEvery parking meter in Lewes, UK has been attacked twice in the past two years.
Every parking meter in Lewes, UK has, on average, been attacked by vigilantes at least twice in the past two years. The 185 assaults on the town's eighty machines have driven the damage total to date beyond £220,000 (US $415,000). Twenty-six of the devices have been completely destroyed.
According to the Sussex Express newspaper, fireworks have been the most common method used to blow up the devices. This vigilante action may force the local council to abandon the unpopular "pay and display" style of parking meter.
