Australian Proposal to Eliminate Due Process FurtherAustralian official endorses proposal to remove driving privileges within 24 hours of anyone accused of excessive speeding.
It's bad enough that 700 drivers in Adelaide, Australia will lose their license because of speed cameras. After all, faced with a camera ticket -- some proven to be faulty -- you are in the position of proving your own innocence in court. Responding to speed camera photos of cars traveling at high speed, an Australian official endorsed legislation that would impose a six month suspension "within 24 hours" of anyone accused of excessive speeding. It's not clear how due process could be served within such a short time frame.
Article Excerpt:[Assistant Commissioner Graham] Barton said speeding drivers could face serious charges, including driving at a speed dangerous to the public. Legislation to strip drivers of their licence if caught travelling at more than 45km over the speed limit will be introduced to State Parliament this year.
If passed, a six-month suspension will be imposed within 24 hours on anyone caught driving at more than 45km/h over the speed limit.
The current fine of $343 will rise to $500 and the existing penalty of six demerit points will remain.
