12/31/2004Insurance Industry Wants Roadside Insurance Checks
Insurance industry looks to cameras to ensure everyone pays up to drive.
You can't go anywhere in London without being caught on a government camera, and the insurance industry couldn't be more pleased. Not satisfied with the additional millions from speed camera points, the industry now advocates cameras be used to ensure everyone driving also pays an insurance company directly for the privilege.
At present the police need a "valid reason" to check the Motor Insurance Database (MID). So, the police would have to stop a driver for another
offence, such as speeding, before checking the database to see whether that driver had valid cover.
