New York: Camera Flash Forcing People to Move
New York City, New York residents blinded by the light of red light cameras.

The constant flashing of New York City, New York red light cameras is disturbing city dwellers to such a degree that some are considering moving, as the devices are frightening pets and keeping infants awake at night. WCBS-TV interviewed residents who lived near the camera located at 57th and 9th.

"It's a white flashing light that is so jarring, that it completely takes you off your feet," Alan Ebert said. "I just have to wonder the stupidity of that, putting something up and not aiming it correctly."

On Staten Island, the problem is the same.

"You can't relax and sit down and watch a movie with the lights off," Kelli Mezzatesta told WCBS. "We're actually looking to sell because of this light."

Moving may not be a solution. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is pushing for a dramatic expansion of the program that would more than double the number of devices in use, raising annual revenue from $20 million to $40 million. The Department of Transportation claimed that it had made adjustments to the flash, but the problem remains.
