Mesa Turns Red Light Cameras into Speed Cameras
Red light cameras in Mesa, Arizona will also now issue speeding tickets.

Mesa city councilIn a move to bolster flagging revenue from its automated enforcement system, the Mesa, Arizona City Council voted Monday to increase the number of red light cameras in the city from 13 to 30. Five of the new digital cameras will also be set to issue speeding tickets in addition to the red light tickets. Mesa already operates five mobile photo radar units.

The new "speed on green" technology means some motorists could receive two tickets for each trip through a Mesa intersection. Nearby Chandler and Scottsdale are also exploring this feature.

American Traffic Solutions, a private vendor, will operate the cameras and share revenue with the city. The cameras are expected to be in place by next April.
