9/9/2005North Carolina: Speeding for Katrina Victims
Durham County, North Carolina judge turns speeding convictions into disaster relief donations.
Durham County, North Carolina District Court Judge Marcia H. Morey has more concern for the victims of the Katrina disaster than she does for collecting state revenue. Between Tuesday and Thursday this week, she dropped the fines for minor offenders -- mostly speeders -- if they agreed to donate the money to relief agencies like the Red Cross. Judge Morey believes the donations, made on the honor system, have raised $2000.
Morey has been a judge since 1999 and presides over the juvenile treatment court.
"I'm sure Durham would appreciate the same help if we were in the same dire circumstances," [Judge Morey] said. "It's not taking away from Durham. It's giving to others."
