7/29/2005Shreveport, LA: Disabled Man Charged $179 for Honking
Police in Shreveport, Louisiana gave a disabled man who honked his horn to get his brother to come to his car a $179 ticket.
Honking your horn in Shreveport, Louisiana is a crime that carries a $179 penalty -- unless you have a good excuse to give to the police. Being disabled and honking to alert a family member to come to the car is apparently not good enough. McKinley Lewis, who has an artificial hip and a severe back injury, found this out the hard way on Wednesday.
"I didn't get out because of all the holes and things and I didn't want to fall," Lewis told KSLA-TV. "I honked my horn two times and beckoned my brother to come here. The police were sitting right here and said, 'you know you're not supposed to honk the horn.' I said, 'I didn't know that officer.'"
Police issued Lewis a citation that he will fight in a September court hearing.
