Finland: Cold Weather Defeats Speed Cameras
Speed cameras fail in the harsh winter conditions of Finnish Lapland.

Bitter cold weather has thwarted the use of speed cameras in Finnish Lapland. Installed in January, the devices have literally frozen in place, unable to collect any revenue. In the Enontekio municipality, for example, temperatures dipped as low as -25 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday.

The Finnish newspaper Aamulehti reports that heating units will be installed in the cameras in an attempt to resume ticketing. Speed cameras have generated millions in revenue in the rest of Finland. In 2005, forty fixed speed cameras and eleven portable units were used to issue 38,372 fines, triple the number in 2004.
