Australia: Deserted Toll Tunnel Becomes Speed Trap
Toll tunnel fails to generate expected toll revenue, instead generates speed camera cash.

Cross City TunnelThe troubled Cross City Tunnel in Sydney, Australia is so sparingly used that thousands of motorists are falling into a speed trap that can increase the cost of the 1.7 mile trip up to $1551.78 (US $1,127.36). Seventeen people paid this price for driving past the tunnel's speed camera at 77 MPH. The majority of the tickets were for driving 9 MPH or less over the limit.

The Sydney Morning Herald identified 5500 motorists who received automated tickets for in addition to their tunnel toll, generating $594,950 (US $431,900) in revenue since the tunnel opened on August 28, 2005.
