The French government will not be collecting the one billion euros (US $1.1 billion) in profit it had been expecting in 2019. Revised budget documents show that speed cameras are now expected to generate between 500 and 600 million euros (US$550 to $650 million) in 2019, Les Echos reported. Credit for the change in automated fortune goes to the Yellow Vest protest movement, which destroyed photo radar devices at a rapid pace. French officials have responded by budgeting for the installation of 1200 upgraded "turret" radars by the end of 2020. The cost of these replacement devices is also cutting into the government's profit margins.
