France: Anti-Camera Protests Grow, Speed Cameras Disabled
Thousands of French motorcyclists and motorists took to the streets to protest against lowered speed limits and photo radar enforcement.

Opposition to the French government's decision to drop the speed limit from 90 km/h (56 MPH) to 80 km/h (50 MPH) on departmental roads continued for the third week. Weekend protests gathered hundreds across the nation opposing the decision that takes effect in July. For example, a large group of motorcyclists in Villefranche-de-Rouergue temporarily shut down a local highway last week Saturday, La Depeche reported. While traffic was stopped, they handed out literature and "No to 80 km/h" bumper stickers while collecting donations to help fund further activism. While traffic was halted, they covered a speed camera in plastic so it could not issue any more tickets.

This Saturday, 800 motorcycles and 100 cars joined in a demonstration against the speed limit on the RN141 and RN10 between Hiersac and Angouleme, according to Sud Ouest. Across Brittany, slow-speed protests took place on affected highways. Meanwhile in Cazaubon, the speed camera on the RN524 was spraypainted orange, Le Journal du Gers reported. Nearby, the speed camera on the D35 had been painted orange on Wednesday. In Limoges, red spraypaint took out a set of four speed cameras located on the RN21, RN520 and A20, according to Le Populaire du Centre. Green spraypaint took out the speed camera on the D35 in Gabarret on Wednesday, Sud Ouest reported. On Friday, the speed camera on the RD461 in Epenoy was destroyed with a burning tire, according to L'Est Republicain. Bright yellow spraypaint took out the speed camera on the RD618 in Viviers-sur-Chiers, Le Republicain Lorrain reported.
