Maryland Makes One Million from Suspended Licenses
Maryland changes rules to increase revenue from overdue parking and camera tickets.

Maryland made over one million dollars from licenses it suspended from overdue parking and red light camera tickets in 2004. The state is making rule changes and expects this revenue to increase significantly. An estimated 34,700 individuals last year had their licenses suspended or flagged and paid a $30 penalty fee to have it cleared -- generating $1,041,000 in revenue.

Current regulations waive the $30 fee if a motorist pays off his tickets at least two months before the registration renewal date. Maryland plans to do away with this waiver, and allow other jurisdictions to enter their unpaid ticket program. The state has no official estimate of the increase in revenue from the rule changes.
